Riot has quite a story. He was born blind and lame (probably a dislocated shoulder birth injury or super tight tendons in his front legs) and so he got handled a lot. For quite a few weeks we were able to walk right up to him because he didn’t see when the rest of the herd got up and moved when we came into the barn. He got daily leg massages to relax his leg muscles and one day after about six weeks his legs suddenly began working perfectly.

On his birth day and for a few days after we had to make some extra effort to help him get up and going and find his Momma for nursing but before long he was coping on his own very well. We hung a bell around his Momma’s neck and he and the other babies loved to play with it, ringing it on purpose. It was amazing how well he ran with the other babies and got around. It became clear that he was able to differentiate some light and dark after a few days and not long after his shoulder got better he seemed to fully recover his sight. We regard his journey as a minor miracle and have heard a number of anecdotal accounts of other alpaca babies who were born blind and recovered their sight over some time.

Because Riot was handled so much he is a total love bug who is happy to have his neck scratched and to be kissed. He is a very small two year old male and we are not sure how much more he is going to grow over the next year. He carries a new bloodline for us but we still have not made a firm decision about breeding him or not.

Meantime he has a lovely fleece and a delightful temperament. He is showing some interest in the girls so a new pen is being constructed to move him and his gelding buddy Ollie into.
